Rosemaling and heritage are inextricably related for Andrea Herkert. After receiving her V.G.M. (Vesterheim Gold Medalist, 2013) her career as a master artist was launched, though along the way her career included professional calligrapher, watercolorist, and being an Art Educator. Coming from a Norwegian immigrant family who settled in rural Dane County, Wisconsin in the late 1800s, her connection to her heritage is as important as the art itself. Andrea paints for her ancestors, and also for her descendants. She hopes her work in the discipline of Rosemaling will contribute to the cultural preservation of Norwegian Folk Art along with the traditions of the Norwegian-American diaspora.
Andrea regularly teaches private lessons from her country home in Belleville, Wisconsin and travels domestically and internationally to learn, meet, and teach the history and techniques of advanced Rosemaling in many styles both traditional and progressive. Her Rosemaling is uniquely rich with a wide spectrum of traditionally mixed oil colors. Her natural strength in composition and design have augmented disciplined apprenticeships, intensive courses, and countless drawing-boards to corroborate what is known in the Rosemaling community as “Gold Medal” material.
